What is Sophrology?
Sophrology derives from Greek and means “the study of consciousness in harmony”. It is a mind-body therapeutical approach to develop wellbeing and serenity. It was created in 1963 by Alfonso Caicedo, a Columbian neuropsychiatrist, as he was seeking non-medicinal ways to treat soldiers suffering from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).
Sophrology was inspired by Western techniques (hypnosis, phenomenology, relaxation techniques) and Eastern philosophies (Yoga, Buddhist meditation, Japanese Zen). It is a structured method which consists of breathing exercises, gentle body movements and positive visualisations.
Sophrology is very versatile and can help a variety of issues such as stress, anxiety and sleep problems.
It will help you to:
Become aware of our inner state and surrender to the need to rest.
Increase body awareness to be able to ground yourself in the present moment and stop worrying about the past or the future.
Identify and let go of what causes your anxiety/stress and sleep problems.
Calm the body and mind by down-regulating your nervous system to improve mood, sleep and lower anxiety.
When recovery has started, Sophrology helps you to open your mind to new perspectives, find clarity and energy to make better decisions and align with your personal values.
